Mandatory signs: durability with regulatory adherence are the important factorsMandatory signs convey a message to the targeted audience about what needs to be done and not about restrictions or prohibitions. These are generally road signs for traffic and pedestrians telling them what to do and not what not to do. These signs are generally designed in white color on a blue background with white border. The shape is being circular.    The convention followed universally with regard to color, dimension and design is as decided upon in the Vienna Convention on road signs and signals of 1968. The dimensions of the mandatory signs vary with place of display. It would be relatively larger on rural roads than in a town or city. The basic objective of such signs is to familiarize the eye, using the road, in such a manner that one gets habituated on coming across them in future.   Mandatory Signs are used to let somebody know that is the road users of certain laws and rules to provide safety and for the free flow of traffic. These take account of all signs which give notice of particular obligation, proscription or restrictions with which the road user must act in accordance with. The contravention of these signs is a permissible offence. Some of the signs, which fall under this category, are compulsory ahead only, compulsory turn left, compulsory turn right ahead, compulsory ahead or turn left, compulsory ahead or turn right, compulsory sound horn.    It is important to understand that since these mandatory signs are displayed outdoors they need to withstand extreme climatic conditions year round. These could be in the form of cyclones, incessant downpours, scorching heat, etc. vulnerability to rust, wear and tear, degradation could be a cause of concern and therefore the material chosen for such signs should be capable enough to withstand adversities over a convenient period of time. The materials generally chosen for the purpose are self adhesive vinyl, semi rigid PVC and foam PVC. There are also various other materials that suit specific applicability.   The visibility of road signs at night is essential for drivers to read them at easily during night hours. This call for such signs to be retro reflective. These retro reflective grade could be in the form of low performance glass bead product used only for street name plates and parking signs, high intensity ones generally a micro prismatic product commonly used for directional signs or less important regulatory Mandatory signs.
